Log splitters do a great job during the cold season when it comes to splitting wood quickly and with little effort. It is all the more annoying when the log splitter fails. In the following, we will explain which errors or problems can occur if the log splitter no longer works.

Horizontal log splitters are more prone to problems than vertical ones

Vertical or horizontal log splitter

Log splitters come in two different designs: horizontal (lying) and vertical (standing). Private individuals usually have horizontal log splitters, as these are much cheaper, handier and easier to transport. However, they are also more prone to defects as they are designed for lighter work, i.e. thinner wood. In the following, we will therefore explain the most common causes of errors in horizontal log splitters.

Where is the problem?

With horizontal and now and then also with vertical log splitters, one problem in particular occurs again and again: the log splitter no longer moves up, so it gets stuck in the wood, so to speak. There can be different reasons.

Causes of Malfunction

First you should make sure that there is a defect at all and check the following:

  • Does the log splitter have enough fuel or is there power supply?
  • Is the wood maybe that hard or too big?
  • Is the log splitter supplied with sufficient oil and hydraulic fluid?

Once you have checked these basic things, it's time for the smallest work. In order to be able to take a close look at your log splitter, you should remove the casing. then
look for spilled oil, leaking hoses and loose bolts. Because the error can have the following causes, among others:

  • screw loose
  • Oil filter clogged
  • worn gaskets
  • leaking valve
  • Hoses leaking
  • bent parts

How to repair your log splitter

If one of the above problems occurs, you can certainly fix it yourself, for example by:

  • Top up hydraulic fluid and/or oil
  • Replace valves, hoses or seals
  • tighten screws
  • Clean or replace oil filter
  • replace individual parts

When to consult an expert?

You can't fix everything yourself. If there is damage to the engine or you cannot find the cause of the damage, you should consult a specialist. The repair is usually worthwhile, because even a cheap log splitter costs at least 150 euros new.
