Wooden handles in particular give way and burst at some point. The process is accelerated by humidity or very hard work. A high-quality new shovel can cost around 50€. Luckily, replacing a shovel handle isn't hard at all. Learn how to handle your shovel below.

The D-handle is very useful on a shovel

Which stem is suitable?

In specialist shops you will find many different handles, which differ in material, handle shape and of course length and diameter. In terms of material, wooden handles are still the most popular and the easiest to replace. To find the right size, you should remove the old spade handle and measure the diameter of the opening. For the length, it is best to measure the old shovel handle and choose the same one.

Handle shape of the shovel

In principle, there are three different handle shapes for shovels, spades, etc.:

  • button handle
  • T handle
  • D handle

The button grip is ergonomically less useful because it does not offer any support for the hands, which is why it is only rarely used.
T- and D-grips, on the other hand, are equally popular and probably more a question of taste: With the D-grip, you grip into a D-shaped triangle and thus have a secure hold, with the T-grip, you grip a horizontal bar that also allows for easy shoveling and digging. It is best to choose the handle shape that you already had before and that you are used to.

Engage the shovel step by step

  • new shovel handle
  • screw
  • hammer
  • screwdriver
  • cordless screwdriver
  • tongs

1. Remove old shovel handle

First loosen the screws or nails that fix the shovel handle to the shovel head. Then turn your shovel upside down and hit the part of the old handle that is protruding slightly from the opening with the narrow side until the remainder of the handle pulls out.

2. Insert new handle

Be sure to set up the handle in the correct orientation: the handle has a slight bend; this must point backwards and should under no circumstances be at an angle. Insert the stem into the opening, grasp the metal neck with both hands and hit the head with the stem down on the ground several times, so that the stem slides deep into the opening.

3. Screw the handle tight

Finally, screw the shovel head to the intended point on the handle.
