Is your hedge trimmer broken or no longer working properly? You can't fix everything yourself, but you can at least rule out some errors. Find out below when you can lend a hand and when you should have your hedge trimmer repaired.

What's wrong with the hedge trimmer?
Hedge trimmers can have very different faults. The most common are:
- The hedge trimmer (€24.99) makes louder noises than normal when cutting.
- The cutting blades move slower than usual.
- The blades don't move at all.
- The hedge trimmer does not cut, but moves the blades.
When can you repair the hedge trimmer yourself?
You cannot fix electronic defects or problems with the engine yourself, unless you are an electrician or a specialist in engine technology. However, in most cases you cannot know immediately whether the cause of the damage lies with the motor or the electronics. So what can you do?
You can rule out that the problem is caused by dirt or rust. You can also find and repair loose screws and blunt knives yourself.
So do the following.
Repair hedge trimmer yourself
- screwdriver
- old rag
- metal brush
- resin cleaner
- oil
- gear grease
1. For your safety
Remove all power supplies to prevent the hedge trimmer from turning on while repairing. Put on gloves to protect yourself from injury.
2. Unscrew
Turn the hedge trimmer upside down, unscrew the gear cover and remove it. Remove all other unscrewed individual parts and loosen the fastening screws of the knife blades. Here we explain in detail how to disassemble your hedge trimmer.
3. Fix problems
Is the hedge trimmer heavily soiled? Use the metal brush to remove coarse dirt such as leaf and branch residue both from the inside of the housing and from the knife blades.
Then clean all the corners you can get to with a resin solvent and/or some oil applied to a dry cloth.
4. Oiling
Oil all metal parts of your hedge trimmer, including screws. You can find out how to do this here.
The hedge trimmer does not cut
If the blades move but the hedge trimmer still doesn't cut, then it's probably blunt. In this guide we explain how to sharpen your hedge trimmer yourself.
