In principle, the classic garden raised bed corresponds to a planted compost heap - with correspondingly fertile soil. However, the strong layering is not possible in all raised bed shapes.

Small raised beds should only be filled with soil

Only fill the raised bed with soil

Smaller raised beds, for example - for example the plant tub of a table raised bed or a raised bed in a fruit box - are not suitable for layering, as there is not enough space for the necessary decomposition processes. You simply fill in good potting soil in such raised beds, as well as in a raised bed where layering is not possible due to a lack of material or where you want to save yourself the effort. However, it is advisable in any case to have a drainage filled in at the bottom, which should be up to 30 centimeters thick in a high bed. The light expanded clay balls, but also gravel and / or crushed stone are particularly suitable for this.

Which soil for the raised bed?

Good soil for balcony plants or potted plants is generally suitable, which you upgrade with compost, perlite (€37.51) and rock dust (€14.13). For herbs, use herbal soil, which is thinned with sand for the Mediterranean species. Heavy consumers such as tomatoes and other fruit vegetables, on the other hand, benefit from tomato soil.

tips

Algae lime and horn shavings (€32.93) also enhance potting soil for raised beds in terms of nutrient composition.
