Eustoma, also known as prairie gentian or Japanese rose, is a relatively unknown houseplant in this country. It was initially grown mainly as a cut flower. The plant with its beautiful flowers is not hardy. It is therefore not suitable for cultivation in the garden.

The eustoma is not hardy

Eustoma is not hardy

Eustoma is native to the USA, where it grows in very sunny, warm locations. She can't stand the cold. It is therefore only cultivated as a houseplant in our latitudes.

It should never get colder than ten degrees at the location.

Great gentian is rarely grown for more than one season

Overwintering a eustoma is difficult. She needs a very bright place where it is not too warm. It is therefore usually disposed of after flowering.

Overwinter eustoma properly

  • Bright location
  • not below 10 degrees
  • pour little
  • do not fertilize

If you want to overwinter a prairie gentian, look for a location that is as bright as possible. If the plant does not get enough light, it will not survive the winter. The temperatures should be around ten degrees. Water very sparingly in winter so that the substrate does not dry out completely.

If the prairie gentian is in a warmer place in winter, such as in the living room, you have to water it a little more often. Don't fertilize in winter.

Watch out for pest infestation during the winter. Eustoma is particularly susceptible to spider mites in a warm location.

Site claims of the eustoma

In warm summer you are welcome to place the Eustoma outside on the balcony or terrace. There it prefers a location with at least four hours of direct sun a day.

Place the gentian under a rain shelter. Do not use saucers or planters to prevent water from accumulating at the roots.

Since the Eustoma is not hardy, it can only be outdoors when there is no longer any danger of frost, i.e. from the end of May. Bring them back indoors before the autumn nights get too cool.

tips

Propagating eustoma is not easy. It can be grown from seed. However, consistently high temperatures must be guaranteed.
