Pennywort blooms profusely, but many of the yellow flowers are sterile. Seed pods rarely mature. Obtaining new plants by sowing is therefore not horticultural practice. But that is also because we have three other, well-functioning ways of propagation available to us.

Pennywort is quite easy to propagate

The three common propagation methods

  • separate offshoots
  • share plant
  • root cuttings

separate offshoots

Pennywort, also known as pennywort, conquers the space around it as a typical groundcover with its long shoots. If its shoots come into contact with the earth, they form roots. You can separate such a runner from the mother plant and then dig it up with the roots. Plant it in its destination and water it well.

tips

Separating rooted offshoots from the mother plant is not just for propagation. In this way, the growth is also prevented from spreading excessively.

Divide pennywort plant

With good care, any pennyplant will turn into a lush specimen, whether it's growing outside by the pond, in a window box, or underwater in an aquarium. From such pennywort you can easily get two new plants:

  • Dig up the plant carefully
  • shake off earth
  • Cut root ball into two or more parts
  • use a sharp, clean knife
  • roots and leaves must remain on each piece
  • plant and water each section separately

Propagation via cuttings

As a hardy plant, the pennywort delights us with its existence for many years. But so that its growth does not get out of hand over the years, it must be pruned regularly. Cutting material for propagation can be collected in a targeted manner.

  1. Take 5-10 cm long top cuttings from young shoots, below each node. The head cuttings should have leaves, but not flowers or buds.
  2. Remove the lower leaves of the cuttings.
  3. Fill small pots with nutrient-poor soil.
  4. Put one cutting in each pot.
  5. Moisten the soil and cover it with a clear plastic bag.
  6. Put the pots in a warm and bright place.
  7. Keep the soil constantly moist and regularly air the covers.
  8. As soon as the first leaves appear, you should repot the young plants into larger pots as soon as possible.
