The name spurge, which is common in German-speaking countries for the genus of the numerous Euphorbia species, is no coincidence: Spurge plants secrete a caustic milky sap when injured, which in most cases can be quite hazardous to health.

The Dangers of the Spurge Family
The latex-like, coagulating milky sap of the euphorbia contains so-called di- and triterpene esters in addition to other toxins. This can cause severe pain and chemical burns, especially on the sensitive mucous membranes. If spurge plants are cut, the fumes alone can cause irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract. In any case, when cultivating euphorbia, pay attention to:
- suitable protective measures during care (gloves)
- regular and adequate room ventilation
- the safety of young children and pets
Caring for indoor plants without panic
Despite the dangerous ingredients in euphorbia, they do not necessarily have to be banned from the windowsill. On closer inspection, many popular and attractive houseplants are harmful to health when eaten or even when touched. However, you should have a certain sensitivity when dealing with the plants in order to be able to enjoy their exotic beauty safely.
tips
If you want to be on the safe side, you should look for alternatives to the spit palm and triangular spurge when choosing indoor plants. Finally, some spurge species are even suspected of promoting the development of cancerous tumors.
