Do you happen to have an old Euro pallet lying around somewhere? If so, now is the right time to use them. Not only can all kinds of great DIY furniture be built from such a simple wooden pallet, but also a space-saving herb garden for the balcony, terrace or small garden.

A vertical herb garden can be easily created with a Euro pallet

Build a vertical herb garden in the euro pallet

In order to convert the palette into a herb garden, you don't even have to be particularly handy. Basically, all you have to do is cut and screw on the bases and line the resulting flower boxes (€16.99) with pond liner or something similar. The self-built herb garden is ready!

You need that

You will need the following materials:

  • a Euro pallet
  • narrow wooden slats for the bottom of the "flower boxes"
  • mulch or pond liner
  • Possibly decorative materials such as blackboard foil, ropes, masking tape…

as well as corresponding tools:

  • Drill (€97.00) or larger nails and a hammer
  • a large stapler with plenty of staples
  • a saw
  • and sandpaper.

This is how it is built

Once you have gathered all the materials, you can start building. First of all, turn the pallet around and measure how long and wide the bottom of the three future "flower boxes" needs to be. Then cut three suitable shelves from the narrow wooden slat and fasten them well. Once that's done, all you have to do is line the "flower boxes" with foil and staple them - done. The rest is just fine work, which you can do as you wish or not. The herb palette can be nicely decorated with blackboard foil and ropes, sanded smooth and varnished / painted or whatever else you can think of for embellishment.

Plant the pallet properly

Fill the resulting flower boxes with a suitable herb substrate, the composition of which depends entirely on the desired species. Mediterranean herbs get a lean, sandy substrate, other kitchen herbs, on the other hand, a richer mixture than potting and herbal soil and some sand. Don't forget to place a few centimeters of smaller pebbles or similar under the substrate as drainage - after all, waterlogging is deadly for most herbs. Around 12 different herbs fit into a standard Euro pallet with three "flower boxes". Of course, the exact number depends primarily on how large the selected species usually grow and how often you want to harvest them. Give the plants enough air and light to grow healthily.

Which herbs are suitable for planting on the pallet?

In principle, all leaf and flowering herbs are suitable for cultivation in the herb palette. Only root herbs such as horseradish do not thrive under these conditions, after all the space is quite limited. When planting the boxes, make sure you always mix herbs with similar moisture and nutrient needs - combinations like parsley and rosemary might not get along too well. For example, plant the top row (where a lot of sun gets there) with Mediterranean herbs, the ones below with special features such as coriander, basil, mint or various wild herbs and the bottom row with common kitchen herbs such as parsley, chives and chervil.

tips

Always fasten the herb pallet well, for example on a wall or with the help of support poles. If it is used as a privacy screen in the garden, you can also set it in concrete. This securing is necessary so that the whole construction does not fall over with the next breeze.
