In many gardens there are prefabricated or do-it-yourself garden houses. Set up quickly and easily, these usually fully meet the requirements. But if you want a stable arbor for many years, you can build the garden house yourself like a small house. In this guide, we have summarized what you need to pay attention to and how to proceed professionally.

A brick garden house is more stable than a wooden house

It doesn't work without a building permit

A garden house (€24.90) that is bricked up requires a building permit in any case. It is often read that these houses are not subject to approval up to a certain volume, but such information is incorrect. For such a house you need a full-surface foundation, so it is always subject to approval.

blueprint

This must be properly dimensioned and contain all the necessary details. As a rule, proof of load capacity is also required. It is therefore advisable to have the construction plan drawn up by an architect.

The foundation

In order for the small house to be stable, a full-surface foundation is necessary. An old masonry rule says that for sufficient stability, this must be about three times as thick as the wall thickness. For large houses, it is therefore advisable to use an excavator as an aid.

How is brickwork done?

material list

For a brick garden house you need a little more material than for a wooden house in addition to the specialist knowledge.

For the foundation:

  • construction foil
  • formwork material
  • gravel
  • concrete

For the walls

  • bricks or ytong stones
  • mortar
  • concrete
  • If you want to additionally insulate the house, use suitable materials

The required tools:

  • String to mark the outline
  • Shovel and spade or a small excavator to dig the pit
  • vibrating plate
  • trowel
  • level
  • plummet

make foundation

First, the excavation pit is excavated and supported in it by formwork. Align the boards horizontally using the spirit level and plumb line (7.13€). Then fill in a layer of gravel, lay the construction tarpaulin and bring in a reinforcement. The concrete is then poured in evenly.

raise walls

To make the wall really straight, do the following:

  • The first layer of stones is placed in a thick bed of mortar. Align the bricks very precisely.
  • Retighten the guide line in each row to ensure the exact placement of the stones.
  • Frequent checks with the plumb bob ensure that the wall is not crooked. A sense of proportion is by no means sufficient here.
  • In order to transfer forces, the brickwork must have sufficient binding.
  • In the area of windows and doors, wooden frames are used, which are walled over with U-profiles.
  • The top of the wall also consists of U-profiles, which are then reinforced and filled with concrete.

tips

The use of flat stones and thin-bed mortar makes the work of bricklaying much easier. Nevertheless, as a layperson, you should get help from a specialist if necessary.
