Spring moss thrives without any problems in places in the pond where otherwise, from the planting point of view, nothing really wants to grow. Depending on the water quality, the hardy plant fronds are bright green. Also called fever moss, the shrub lichen has long been used as a fever-reducing remedy.

Spring moss cleans the water

Spring moss, as a plant that grows under water all year round and produces oxygen, can be used in the garden pond for natural pool cleaning. The short fronds of the "Fontinalis antipyretica" cover the pool floor within a very short time, depending on the color and appearance of the water quality. The otherwise evergreen plant is also very popular with fish as a spawning ground.

The requirements in the garden pond

Quellmoos is very undemanding and easy to care for. It does not have to be planted, just thrown into the water. It multiplies relatively quickly and after a few days will grow in some places in the pond as if by itself. Alternatively, spring moss can be attached to stones and roots with its adhesive organs and also grows firmly on substrates. Like many other types of moss, it gets by with little light and settles in water up to 20 meters deep without any problems.

Maintain spring moss in the garden pond

The hardy fronds grow firmly in places that are unsuitable for other aquatic plants due to the low incidence of light. Additional fertilization is not necessary, since spring moss has only a very low nutrient requirement. Fertilizers can be applied in the summer months, which will lead to a particularly rapid reproduction of the plants.

How is spring moss propagated?

Since the long shoots should be cut back anyway, you can use them for propagation at the same time, or you can simply divide the cushions of the plants and tie them up again at the desired spots in the pond.

tips

If you take the trouble to cut back the spring moss a little more often, the plants will grow particularly dense and very compact afterwards.
