- Designs for small garden ponds
- Dig out the ground and sink in the pool
- Let the water flow, then it's time to plant
Especially with a mini pond in a small garden, the shape and size of the system must match in order to achieve the most sensible biological balance possible. Prefabricated pools require little structural effort and can be easily integrated into existing garden landscapes.

Whether you lovingly assembled it yourself or bought it as a ready-made pool, the garden pond in the small garden has its own charm and sets design accents. In principle, any location that is a little in the semi-shade and a little away from deciduous trees is suitable for the new mini-pond. Given the size of the site, the future accessibility of the shore area must also be considered, so that the excavation pit should not be too close to the residential building or part of the property enclosure.
Designs for small garden ponds
If you don't want to excavate large amounts of earth, you can easily use a car tire for your garden pond in a small garden, which is lined with pond liner on the inside. With the use of the prefabricated pond basin available in the building materials trade, the work can also be done quickly. The plastic pools can be used underground, but also on the ground level or mounted as a raised bed and, thanks to their many shapes, offer plenty of design freedom for your own creative ideas.
Dig out the ground and sink in the pool
When using a prefabricated pool, an allowance of at least 15 to 20 cm must be planned for the circumference of the excavation pit. After the excavation, the bottom of the pond is best filled with a layer of sand and compacted as evenly as possible. After the basin has been inserted and aligned with the spirit level, sand is poured into all the gaps, which ensures that the water tank, which is later filled, is held securely and firmly.
Let the water flow, then it's time to plant
Even in the smallest of spaces, a fantastic water landscape can be set up, following the example of Japanese miniature gardens. After your small garden pond has received the first water filling, you can continue with the planting. Small floating leaf plants such as:
- dwarf water lilies;
- sea jug;
- sour grasses (e.g. pond rushes);
- water hyacinth and water lettuce (especially exotic touch!);
tips
When inserting, be sure to observe the respective planting distances and depths of the plants, which should not be too close together. The space requirements of most aquatic plants can increase by a multiple of their original size after just a few months.
