Slightly larger pond systems are ideal for beautifying them with small jetty systems made of solid wood or even a curved wooden bridge. The quality and service life depend on the type of wood selected, so that it is better to avoid cheap wood in favor of the look.

Wooden bridges in the pond look attractive and invite you to linger

Only: the right place must first be found for the rustic wooden bridge made of western red cedar, oak or robinia. This shows again that a pond area can never be too big. The most popular elements made of natural wood, which not only look great, but are also useful, include:

  • bridges and footbridges;
  • wooden decks;
  • seats;

Before you start building the cozy pond terrace or a jetty, you have to pay attention to a high quality of wood in the interest of later load-bearing capacity, because not every type of wood is suitable for outdoor use.

The favorites for pond construction with wood

  • Larch: very durable, but rarely commercially available; long lasting even without impregnation;
  • Spruce: not particularly resistant softwood; Outdoor use only with impregnation; Shelf life between five and eight years; cheap price;
  • Pine: moderately resistant with impregnation; Outdoor durability between eight and ten years;
  • Red Cedar: Imported wood, mostly from Canada; the reddish color looks particularly noble; can be kept for up to 15 years even without impregnation; the disadvantage is the high price;
  • Oak & robinia: (still) medium price, good suitability for outdoor use, durability of the hardwoods is between 15 and 20 years;
  • Tropical woods: durable even without impregnation; difficult to work with; negative environmental balance, since the wood usually comes from non-renewable stocks;

Professional work - a question of safety

Jetties, bridges and decks should not simply be placed indiscriminately in the water with pile supports. Your footprint must be large enough so that you cannot damage the bank area with the plants and the pond seal. The load-bearing structure of wooden decks and walkways must therefore begin at least one meter (better 1.50 meters) in front of the edge of the pool. The self-construction of bridges requires a certain knowledge of static values and should therefore only be carried out by people who are familiar with the subject in the interest of practical and safe accessibility.

tips

If the water area is less than 30 m2, you should be cautious about erecting wooden structures, as they tend to spoil the appearance of small ponds.
