Garden houses are becoming more and more popular, whether as a functional storage space for garden tools and bicycles or as a second living room in the summer months. Due to the many different sizes and designs, there is something for almost every taste and need. But what about the assembly, can it also be done by laypeople? We think so, because the structure is easier than many assume.

When building a garden house, the step-by-step approach is of great importance

What tools are needed?

If you have already built a foundation for the garden house, you only need the following tools for assembly:

  • Drill (97.00€) or cordless screwdriver
  • screwdriver
  • hammer
  • tongs
  • level
  • folding rule
  • several screw clamps
  • carpenter angle
  • bat

Wanting to set up a garden shed (€24.90) on your own can be a feat of strength. Having someone or two on hand to help you makes the job a lot easier.

The preparation

Irrespective of whether you have opted for a prefabricated or log house, you should open all packages before assembling and check that they are complete. Please do not simply lay the wooden parts on the ground, but use large plastic sheets as a base. This protects the surface from unsightly dirt.

Untreated wood should now be painted or recessed on the inside and outside to protect it from the elements.

The assembly instructions

Are you also one of those people who put the instructions aside with a smile and think: "That's how it works". But it would be extremely annoying if you had to realize that something went wrong when the little house was almost completely assembled. Therefore, take your time and read the entire instruction carefully.

The floor

In the garden house made of prefabricated elements, the base plate is usually already assembled. In the log house, on the other hand, there are often several bearing planks in the package, which are placed on the foundation at approximately equal intervals according to the construction plan. Both models have a recess for the door on one side, which can also be used to determine the position of the arbour.

Build house from elements

With the element house you now have to screw on the missing side panels, then you can start with the final assembly:

  • First loosely screw only one side part to the floor, this makes later corrections easier.
  • Place wall parts on the floor and screw them together.
  • Add the other parts and also screw them together.

To ensure that there are no gaps between the elements, it is essential to fix them with screw clamps. The door is then used in most models. Also work very carefully here so that everything closes cleanly. Only then are the elements screwed to the base plate.

Attention: Depending on the model, a different procedure may be necessary. Please follow the manufacturer's instructions.

The first row of boards at the log cabin

When you screw the laid out joists to the first row of planks, precise work is very important. To ensure that all walls are straight, it is important to check that the frame is square. This can easily be done with a carpenter's square. Corrections can now be made without any problems.

Afterwards, a plank is always attached to the right and left, front and rear and connected with a bat. Depending on the model, the door is used when the second to fourth layer of planks is reached.

Based on the plan, you can see where the window needs to be positioned and at what height.

The roof

The construction of the house roof is the same for most houses, regardless of the construction method:

  • Attach the ridge purlin in the middle.
  • Screw on the eaves strips at the same distance on the right and left.
  • Fasten the roof boarding with nails.
  • Cover with roofing felt or bitumen shingles.

In the case of the log house, it is now a matter of laying the floorboards inside.

Set up a metal shed.

These are particularly easy to assemble as all parts are prefabricated. Here, too, first ensure a stable subsoil; a slab foundation is recommended. After thoroughly studying the assembly instructions, it's time to set up. This is usually done as follows:

  • Anchor the substructure in the floor panels.
  • Insert the side panels into the guide rails of the construction. The correct position can be found in the instructions.
  • Connect these to the top rail for stability.
  • Put on sloping ceilings and ridge beams.
  • Insert door frame.
  • Lay the roof panels.
  • Install door.

tips

When planning, please bear in mind that you will need a state-specific building permit, depending on the size and location of the garden house.
