Many plants, just think of the water lilies, need a lot of sunlight. Others prefer a slightly shadier location, such as these:
- Cape water spike;
- Marsh Marigold;
- horsetails;
- Riparian plants such as hanging sedge, pennywort, sequoia and ligularia.
In particularly hot regions, the main planting should always be in semi-shade, especially if fish are also planned. With large-leaved plants, such as water lilies, the water usually warms up quite quickly, which in turn causes an almost explosive development of filamentous algae promoted. This does not mean that the water quality deteriorates, as is often assumed. However, you should then reach for the landing net more often than usual so that the amount of algae does not increase too much.
Planting in a pot or directly in the pond floor?
With newly created ponds, it is advantageous if several planting zones for different water depths are prepared first. This means that different cultures can be created independently of each other, the planting is easier to care for overall and you can easily clean pond plants that are sensitive to cold in autumn bring indoors for the winter. Even if you later want to make changes, it is much easier to exchange plants in grid shelves or pots. The trade offers a large number of types of containers (metal baskets, polyethylene or clay pots) for aquatic plants that are already grown in the substrate and grow vigorously.
