Green roofs not only make sense from an ecological point of view, a natural roof also makes the garden house look more beautiful. However, before you start planning and designing, you should check the stability of your arbor. Depending on the roof area, 50 to 150 kilos of weight come onto the roof. Before implementation, the manufacturer must be asked whether the roof can actually cope with this additional load.

A green roof looks pretty and keeps you fresh in the summer

Required tool

The tool list is short. In addition to a ladder, all you need is a sharp cutter knife and a rake.

Materials needed

  • protective fleece
  • root protection film
  • filter fleece
  • drainage plates
  • substrate
  • suitable plants such as herbs and sedum

Lay out root protection foil

The conventional roof covering made of bitumen shingles is not sufficient, because these are quickly penetrated by the roots of the plant. Therefore, a special root protection foil must be laid out with a sufficient overhang. Please note that bitumen and PVC do not get along, and also place a separating layer of fleece between the foil and the roofing felt.

Ensure drainage

Even if the green roof can store a large part of the rainwater, good water drainage is necessary. For this reason, cut a small opening in the root protection foil to drain the water into the rain gutter.

Lay protection, filter fleece and drainage panels

These are, also with a sufficient overhang, in the order:

  • protective fleece
  • Drainage panels (apply them overlapping)
  • filter fleece

spread over the root protection sheet. For every layer, think about drainage.

Spread substrate

Now it's time to evenly distribute the soil, which gives the plants the necessary support. Smooth them out well with a rake.

The actual greening

The basis is formed by sedum sprouts, as these are very undemanding and take root quickly. Scatter the herb seeds mixed with sand on top.

Water

Since good water drainage is ensured, thorough irrigation can now take place. Water the green roof regularly during the first few weeks of drought.

tips

A green roof can be excellently combined with solar cells. This makes you independent of the regional power grid in a very environmentally friendly way.
