Only the right edging creates the harmonious framework for the rock garden. However, what is suitable depends specifically on the design of the bed - a natural rock garden, for example, needs such a border. There are various possibilities: The border can be made of stone, plants, wood or plastic or metal.

Stone surrounds
What could go better with a rock garden than a stone border? For this you can
- Boulders and larger boulders
- evenly shaped stones
- gravel / pebbles
- gravel or rubble
- "Artificial" stones such as (roof) tiles or clinker bricks
- stone palisades
- or concrete
use - according to the style of the rock garden in the edging. Larger stones are particularly suitable for hillside gardens, but they should be firmly locked in place with a concrete foundation - otherwise at some point they could no longer withstand the one-sided earth pressure and possibly start to slide.
Inexpensive variant: Enclosure made of cast stone
Of course, borders made of natural stone look particularly beautiful, but they are also very expensive. A cheaper alternative are enclosures made of cast stone. This is made of cement, but looks quite similar to natural stones. Another advantage of this material is its versatility, since it can be cast in any shape imaginable and colored as desired.
living borders
Many stone borders (e.g. made of gravel or crushed stone) can be combined with a planting. Various perennials are suitable for this, but also grasses, low shrubs or ground cover. In this way, create a gentle but clear demarcation of the rock garden from the rest of the garden. Resourceful gardeners have been using boxwood as a fence for individual parts of the garden for centuries. In fact, the evergreen box can be designed very creatively, but it must be pruned regularly and well cared for. Fortunately, the wood is one of the most suitable plants for a rock garden anyway.
Brick enclosures
Aside from stone or plants, dry stone walls also make excellent fencing for the rock garden. This variant is particularly useful as a support for a slope garden or for a rock garden in a raised bed.
tips
You can also border the rock garden with paths and squares. Depending on how you create your course or shape, but also which covering material you choose, you can ensure a harmonious or high-contrast visual delimitation.
