The blood flower belongs to the amaryllis family. Getting them to bloom is not easy. That is why the Haemanthus katherinae, as it is botanically called, is also considered a plant for experts. Only if it is properly cared for and treated will it form flowers. Why is the blood flower not blooming?

Mistakes in care are often the reason why the blood flower does not bloom

Why isn't the blood flower blooming?

The blood flower only blooms if properly cared for. Causes for the absence of flowers can be:

  • Substrate too moist
  • Shoot too weak
  • nutrient deficiency
  • no cold phase
  • shared too often

Only strong shoots are able to produce flowers. Young blood flowers therefore usually only flower for the first time after two to three years.

Of course, the care must also be right for the blood flower to bloom. The substrate should be kept dry rather than moist. Regular fertilization ensures strong, green leaves.

Don't share Bloodflower too often

The blood flower can be propagated very easily by division. However, you should not divide them too often, as this weakens the shoots so that the blood flower does not bloom.

Divide the bulbs at most every three years so that the shoots remain strong and develop flowers.

Blood beeches need a rest period

A common reason for no blooms is that the bloodflower hasn't had a rest in a cooler environment.

It must be kept cool in winter. The temperatures should be between 12 and 14 degrees during this time. The winter location can be dark, since the blood flower draws in its leaves in autumn anyway.

Don't forget to repot!

Repot young blood flowers every spring if possible. Older specimens need a new pot every two to three years. The vessel should be about five centimeters more in diameter than the onion. Larger pots are not cheap, as the bloodflower can then put its energy into developing new roots and not into strengthening the later flowering shoots.

Be careful to damage the roots as little as possible when repotting.

tips

The onion plant demands the name blood flower from the red juice. It emerges when the leaves and stems are injured.
