Even if the garden house is well maintained and regularly painted, the wood will eventually start to weather and the house will no longer be a pretty sight. Penetrating moisture and cold make for an uncomfortable room climate, and a musty smell spreads. A visually appealing cladding is also an option for a do-it-yourself garden shed made from OSB panels, which are practical but not very attractive and are also not weather-resistant.

The new facade must also be protected from moisture

Before covering - remove defective material

First, inspect all of the walls and remove any weathered boards. Insulation that has already become damp must also be removed and replaced with new insulation, otherwise there is a risk of mold. Install new OSB boards over the insulation layer. Now it's time to start dressing again.

Which materials are suitable?

There are various options available to you for this:

  • Profile boards are very popular because they are easy to work with.
  • According to the principle of the curtain wall, rear-ventilated facade, you can also clad the garden house (€24.90) with vinyl, artificial slate or other modern plastics.

Refurbishment with profiled boards is more beautiful because it looks more natural and can be installed with a little manual skill without any complications. We would therefore like to limit ourselves to these in our following instructions.

What must be considered?

  • Always process profile boards outdoors vertically or with the groove pointing downwards. So no water can collect.
  • Work very carefully, because a vertical alignment later catches the eye.
  • If possible, an assistant should be available for re-cladding, who aligns and fixes the profile boards while you screw them on.
  • Profile boards made of larch wood are best suited. Be sure to include other types of wood.

Is additional wood protection necessary?

Larch wood does not necessarily have to be painted, as it is very resistant and weathers in a pretty shade of grey. Depending on the location in the garden, a colored coat of paint is more attractive. If you opt for this variant, always use special weather protection or facade paints for the wood base.

Method:

  • Cut or pull the vapor barrier film from the roof and staple it to the OSE panels.
  • Attach horizontal counter battens. The distance should not be greater than 65 centimeters.
  • Saw off the groove on the first board and pre-drill the screw holes.
  • Screw on plumb, leaving a centimeter gap to the roof underlay. This is important for rear ventilation.
  • Attach the second and all further boards.
  • So that the tongue or groove does not splinter or even break, you should not join the profile boards directly with the batten hammer, but create a board section.
  • Pre-cut boards to length on the windows and doors. It is extremely difficult to produce an even cut-out after assembly.

All profile boards are attached? Then, if you wish, you can paint them with an insulating primer and then apply wood protection paint.

tips

Shutters give the garden house a cozy look. You don't have to spend a lot of time making these yourself, you can use inexpensive louvre doors, which you can also pre-treat with weather protection paint.
