The cleaning of the pond - and thus also the cleaning of the pond liner from mud - should not be neglected if possible. In our article you can find out how the pond and pond liner can best be cleaned and when it is best to do the cleaning.

At the end of summer the pond should be cleaned

time to clean the pond

There are two times of the year when cleaning the pond is highly recommended:

  • in spring at the beginning of the pond season
  • after the end of summer

The purpose of post-summer cleaning is to remove the dead algae from the pond at the end of the summer. After flowering, they no longer grow unchecked and over time settle at the bottom of the pond.

In this way, a pond can even "tip over" - i.e. completely algae. The oxygen concentration in the water is then very low, which often causes aquatic life to die from a lack of oxygen.

During the winter months, ponds become less polluted, but can also tip over. In addition, individual aquatic plants may have died. Take the opportunity and use this opportunity to check the liner - especially at the edge of the pond - for damage caused by frost and snow.

cleaning measures

First, the pond itself must be cleaned. This includes several measures:

  • Removal of coarse impurities from the water (use landing net)
  • Checking the aquatic plants and removing dead plants if necessary
  • Pumping out two thirds of the pond water (fresh water is used when refilling)

Several methods can then be used to clean the foil:

  • Cleaning with a high-pressure cleaner
  • Brush with a scrubber
  • Cleaning with the steam jet

With all of this cleaning work, which is best carried out when the water level in the pond is very low, you must be guided by the resilience of the liner.

With very thin films, there is always a risk that the film will tear if treated too roughly. So proceed as gently as possible, even if it means more work. If dirty water is produced during the cleaning work, you can simply pump it out with a dirty water pump. Do not use conventional garden pumps for this, they could clog if they do not have a sieve.

Preventive cleaning

At least the cleaning in the spring should always be carried out completely. To protect the pond from dirt throughout the year, you can either cover it or use a so-called skimmer, which keeps the water clean.

tips

However, always wait until the pond has reached a water temperature of at least 12 °C before cleaning it in the spring. If the temperature is lower, it is better to wait a little longer before cleaning.
