On hot summer days, even heat-loving tropical plants and vegetables need effective sun protection anyway. There are several solutions for optimal greenhouse shading. They range from the simple UV-stable film to lamella shading made of plastic mats.

A greenhouse can be shaded from the inside or outside

Just as important for growth as the appropriate ventilation of a greenhouse is the need for plants to be able to enjoy a shadowy existence in extreme heat or when the sun is too intense. When it comes to shades, which by the way have an influence on the overall climate in the house that should not be underestimated, we differentiate according to the type of construction two different variants:

  • Interior shading (which is a bit more complicated to install afterwards than when the greenhouse is set up);
  • External shading (particularly effective because, in addition to sun protection, the internal temperatures are also lowered better);

Do you prefer sun protection inside or outside?

In any case, the external shading is more effective, as it not only prevents the sun's rays from penetrating into the greenhouse interior, but also blocks the thermal energy. In contrast, indoor shading lets the summer heat through to the shading material, which is what the Cooling effect overall reduced again. However, this method has its advantages, especially in winter, as it works on the principle of energy shielding, absorbing the heat radiated by the plants and thus keeping them inside the house.

Shading a greenhouse - a question of materials

And not only that, the costs can also differ significantly if sun protection is to be attached to the greenhouse. One of the inexpensive options for greenhouse shading is to paint the transparent windows. A mixture of chalk and water sometimes it does. Clear disadvantages of the color scheme, which is usually carried out on the outside:

  • The sun protection cannot be regulated.
  • The paint has low weather resistance and is washed off by rain fairly quickly.

Also in terms of appearance, the coat of paint, which usually soon peels off and then looks unclean, is not really for everyone.

External shading of the greenhouse with foil

Simple and often practiced: shading fabric is simply laid over certain sections of the greenhouse window when required, removed again on less sunny days and stored rolled up. The so-called mesh foils made of polyethylene are available in many widths by the meter from the roll and they can be used very easily secured with ground anchors in the ground will. In terms of the material, this type of greenhouse shading can be used for several years. However, with this type of sun protection, the existing roof windows can no longer be opened quite so easily.

tips

The best control options are provided by greenhouse shading with reed or plastic tube mats, which are mounted on a frame and connected to the window front, which can be rolled up and down manually or automatically depending on requirements and the intensity of the sun.
