If the pond filter overflows, there is usually a real emergency and urgent action must be taken. In our article you can find out what causes the overflow can have in individual cases and what you can do to fix it.

If the pond filter overflows, this can have various causes

find out the cause

In many cases, the reason for the sudden overflow of the filter is difficult to determine. What you can definitely do is watch the filter first:

  • when does the filter overflow?
  • what changes are noticeable?
  • do you hear noises?
  • Does the filter regularly overflow at certain times?
  • when does overflow occur?

In some cases you will be able to identify an external cause by closely observing the filter and the overflow. In other cases, you will not notice any regularities or abnormalities.

Then check carefully whether one of the typical causes of the overflow occurs in your case:

  • Filter outlet relocated
  • Filter outlet not high enough
  • Filter outlet reduced
  • Outlet pipes have too little slope
  • Walls of the outlet added

Filter outlet relocated

It often happens that the filter outlet is completely or partially clogged - for example due to dirt or solid objects such as stones. Once the obstruction is removed, the filter should no longer overflow.

Filter outlet not installed high enough

If the distance from the filter outlet to the surface is too small, backwater may occasionally occur. Placing the filter higher usually solves the problem.

Another solution can be exactly the opposite: filter outlet directly into the pond - sometimes that works too.

Filter outlet reduced

If reductions to smaller diameters are attached to the filter outlet, you should remove them if possible. A reduction should never be applied to the outlet, the original diameter should always be continued.

Outlet pipes have too little slope

Increase the incline of the spouts and see if that fixes the problem.

Walls of the outlet added

Hard deposits that can hardly be removed can form on the walls over the years. This can also sometimes be the cause of a backlog in the filter.

tips

Try running the filter for 1-2 days without sponges. Another possibility can be to replace the sponges completely. Cleaning the filter should always be the first step anyway.
