A zigzag shrub is easy to care for. It doesn't even need regular pruning as it grows relatively slowly. Pruning is only necessary to keep the shrub in shape and to encourage branching. What you need to consider when cutting zigzag shrubs.

The zigzag shrub tolerates pruning well, but grows slowly

Zigzag shrubs tolerate pruning well

The zigzag shrub does not mind a pruning. You can trim it anytime during the growing season. But this is not necessary that often, as the shrub grows slowly.

The branches moving in all directions look most beautiful anyway when left natural.

If you want a more compact growth, shorten the shoots so that new branches form. Reasons for cutting:

  • keep the shrub in shape
  • stimulate new branches
  • cut cuttings
  • Cut back before overwintering
  • Cultivate a zigzag shrub as a bonsai

Do not cut into old wood

Only ever cut off young shoots. The zigzag shrub doesn't like it when you cut right into the old wood.

Shorten shoots before the winter break

Before you bring the zigzag shrub into winter quarters, you are welcome to cut it back a bit. This avoids space problems in winter.

Cut zigzag shrub as bonsai

The zigzag shrub is so easy to care for that it is ideal for growing as a bonsai. This shrub is ideal for beginners, because you really can't do much wrong. All bushy, upright bonsai forms are possible. The zigzag shrub can also be designed in a cascade shape.

You only have to cut if long shoots disturb the overall picture. You can also wire the bonsai.

It is important that you repot it annually in the first few years and prune the roots a little.

Propagate zigzag shrub by cuttings

You can easily propagate a zigzag shrub yourself by taking cuttings at the beginning of the growth phase.

The cuttings are placed in prepared seed pots (€16.68) and placed at 15 degrees bright but not sunny. The soil must be kept moderately moist.

tips

The non-poisonous zigzag shrub tolerates minus temperatures for a very short period of time - and only if it doesn't get colder than minus five degrees. Zigzag shrubs must therefore always be overwintered frost-free indoors.
