The frankincense plant (Plectranthus), not to be confused with the frankincense tree (Boswellia), is a popular planting for balcony boxes and tubs. The ornamental plant is easy to propagate. This is how the propagation of frankincense plants works.

Propagation via cuttings or seeds
The frankincense plant can be propagated in two ways. Either take cuttings or sow seeds. Propagation from cuttings almost always works.
Growing frankincense plants from seeds is not only more tedious. It is also difficult to obtain seeds. Only specialized nurseries offer this. Sometimes you can get lucky at swap meets.
To take cuttings you need a healthy mother plant. The propagation works very quickly, so that you get new young frankincense plants after just a few weeks.
Propagate frankincense plant by cuttings
- cut cuttings
- remove lower leaves
- Fill the growing pots (€16.68) with substrate
- use several cuttings per pot
- bright but not in direct sunlight
- ideal temperature at 20 degrees
- water moderately
You need shoots that each have at least one or two side shoots. If the tendril is long enough, divide it into individual pieces of 10 to 15 centimeters in length.
So that the incense plant looks nice and compact, several cuttings are always placed in a pot.
Keep the substrate evenly moist, but avoid over-wetting. After just a few weeks, the cuttings have formed roots and can be planted out.
Sow incense plants
Prepare sowing trays and do not sow the seed too thinly. Not all seeds germinate later.
Only lightly cover the seeds with soil. Spray the surface with water. Make sure that there is no waterlogging. Keep the seeds warm.
Prick out young plants very late. The roots are very delicate.
Do not place in the sun immediately after planting
Young frankincense plants like it bright. But they don't tolerate direct sun very well at first. Gradually acclimate them to the bright light.
Do not fertilize young frankincense plants for the first few months.
tips
Frankincense plants are not hardy. They are therefore usually only grown as annual plants. Overwintering in a frost-free place is possible.
