Mountain palms can be propagated from seeds themselves. However, the propagation is a bit more complicated and, above all, takes a very long time. How to get seeds and how to grow a young mountain palm from them.

Is it worth it to propagate a mountain palm yourself?
It is a tedious affair to propagate a mountain palm yourself. It sometimes takes several months for the seed to germinate. You need a lot of patience until you have grown a small mountain palm tree.
Since mountain palms are quite cheap in the trade, it is only worthwhile for real palm fans to propagate these palms themselves.
Harvest seeds yourself or buy them
You can get seeds for mountain palms in the trade, sometimes in different varieties than the usual ones.
However, mountain palms flower indoors after just two to three years. If you want to harvest seeds you will need several plants as the mountain palm is either male or female.
When your palm trees are in bloom, use a brush to stroke the inflorescences several times to fertilize them. When the flowers have dried, the seeds form inside. They are ready to harvest when they turn black or fall off.
Water seeds before sowing
The seed of the mountain palm has a very hard shell. Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for at least 48 hours before sowing.
Gardening experts also recommend gently roughening the shell with some sandpaper.
Sow mountain palm
- Prepare pots with potting soil
- Spread seeds thinly
- cover lightly with soil
- keep bright and warm until germination
- keep moist but not wet
The ideal germination temperature for the seed of the mountain palm is between 24 and 26 degrees. However, avoid direct sunlight at the location of the growing pots.
Keep the substrate well moist without over-soaking.
After germination, you must not fertilize the mountain palm. As soon as the plants have reached a height of about ten centimetres, place them in tuffs in normal plant pots that are as deep as possible.
tips
A mixture of compost with leaf soil or, if necessary, peat has proven itself as a plant substrate for mountain palms. This soil stores enough water and provides the mountain palm with all the nutrients it needs.
