Fungal diseases are rare in palm trees. However, the Mediterranean plants are very sensitive to waterlogging. As a result, the dreaded root rot, which is promoted by fungi, often occurs.

First of all, it is necessary to determine what kind of fungus has attacked the palm tree

sooty mold

This is shown by a black or brown spot on the leaves. Since it primarily forms on lice excrement, you should examine the fronds closely.

remedy

  • Isolate palm trees so that the pests do not attack other plants.
  • Shower thoroughly.
  • Then apply an insecticide tailored to the harmful insects.

root rot

This is favored by incorrect watering behavior. If the water cannot drain properly after watering, for example because the water outlet is blocked, or if excess liquid remains in the saucer, the root ball will become wet. The now prevailing lack of oxygen and fungi, which spread as a result of the poor microclimate, destroy the root system. The palm dries up even though it has been watered enough.

remedy

There are no pesticides against root rot. However, you can try to move the growth and save it.

  • Carefully repot the palm tree. By now you will probably notice a musty musty smell from the fungi and rot.
  • Carefully remove the wet substrate.
  • Damaged roots are no longer crunchy, but feel soft and mushy.
  • Cut these off with sharp, clean scissors.

If the entire root ball has not died, the palm tree can recover. Place the plant in a pot with fresh soil. This should have a sufficiently large water outlet so that the plant does not get wet feet in the future.

Only water when the top inches of soil feel dry (thumb test). Pour away excess moisture in the coaster after a few minutes.

tips

Mealybugs are sometimes confused with fungal infestation, since the little creatures wiped off appear to dust and leave a strange coating. Under the magnifying glass, you can identify the harmful insects without a doubt, so that targeted treatment can take place.
