Overwintering the southern beauties in such a way that they are not damaged can be a challenge, especially for temperature-sensitive specimens. We will explain to you how best to proceed when wintering.

Palms are best overwintered in a bright, cool location

Preparation for the winter

In order for the plant to get through the cold season well, you should stop fertilizing in late summer or early autumn. Check for pests such as spider mites or aphids now and treat the southern beauty accordingly.

clear into the house

As soon as frost threatens, the palm tree is cleared into the house.

Optimal places for wintering are:

  • A bright conservatory that is unheated in the cold season.
  • A greenhouse heated only to freezing point.
  • A draught-free, very cool stairwell.
  • Cellars in which, depending on the temperature, plant lamps provide lighting.

The even temperature is important because the palm fronds immediately evaporate moisture when there are fluctuations and the metabolism of the palm tree gets completely out of step.

care in winter

After wintering, the plants are only watered very sparingly. The rule of thumb here is: the cooler and darker it is in the winter quarters, the less water the plant needs. It is only watered when the upper centimeters of the substrate feel very dry, no fertilizer is used at all.

Pack up the palm tree and leave it outdoors

You can overwinter very large specimens in a well-protected place on the balcony or terrace. Plant fleeces are well suited for this, in which you carefully wrap the palm. Alternatively, the trade has special palm houses that are ideal for wintering.

tips

Hardy outdoor palms, which also defy sub-zero temperatures, still need adequate winter protection. Spread a thick layer of mulch of leaves and brushwood around the root area. In addition, it is recommended to wrap it in a suitable plant fleece.
