Because of its broad, extremely attractive leaves, the betel palm is one of the most popular houseplants. However, it is not considered to be easy, because in addition to the right location, it needs consistent and good care for healthy growth.

The water requirement
The betel palm is a very thirsty plant that needs a lot of water. It is extremely sensitive to drought. Always keep the soil well moist. Unlike many palm species, it doesn't mind a wet root ball, provided a drainage layer of expanded clay (€19.73) or other suitable materials ensures moisture regulation. Always water with room-warm, lime-free water.
How is fertilized?
During the summer months, a special palm fertilizer is fertilized every 14 days in the concentration recommended by the manufacturer.
When does it have to be repotted?
This palm does not tolerate frequent repotting very well. Therefore, only put them in a new container every three to four years. Pay attention to the following points during this maintenance measure:
- It is always repotted in spring.
- Very carefully lift out of the old pot.
- To protect the delicate foliage, only grab the lower part of the trunk.
How is it cut?
As a rule, the betel palm does not have to be shortened, as it grows slowly in the room and tends to spread out. You may only remove completely dried fronds close to the trunk.
What pests and diseases are there?
The betel palm reacts extremely sensitively to care errors. Brown leaf tips indicate that the air is too dry, so spray the plant daily. If the irrigation water contains too much lime, the foliage will become blotchy.
Mealybugs and scale insects are common in the cold season. In the case of a light infestation, carefully remove the harmful insects with a sharp knife or cotton swab. If the infestation is severe, treatment with a suitable insecticide usually helps.
wintering
The betel palm is very warmth-loving and must be overwintered indoors at temperatures of around twenty degrees.
tips
Betel palms are ideal plants for warm, humid rooms or the winter garden, where other plants and regular humidification ensure sufficient humidity. Here they develop to their full splendor and can reach heights of growth of up to two meters. However, fruits like in their natural home are only rarely to be expected here.
