As an evergreen decoration in the room, fresh moss gives way to cocky potted plants. The fluffy texture of the rootless land plant not only creates a natural atmosphere in the garden. Read here practical tips on how to harvest, plant and care for moss for the room.

Moss makes a good companion plant

Harvesting moss for the room correctly - tips & tricks

Look out for moss growing on trees or rocks. At these locations, there is usually no soil sticking to the tethers. You do less damage to the plant if you don't use a tool but your fingers for harvesting. As a precaution, shake the collected moss so that any insects fall out.

Please make sure not to remove more than half of a moss cushion so that the plant can regenerate. Do not go to designated protected areas to harvest moss, as removal is not permitted here.

Planting and caring for indoor culture - this is how it works

Since moss in the room is always threatened by drought stress, we recommend a glass planter with a lid or a tall glass cylinder. The higher the humidity, the longer the moss cushion stays nice and green. This is how you plant and care for the living decoration professionally:

  • Fill the planter with a lean, acidic substrate such as succulent soil or peat sand
  • Spread out the moss on top and press down
  • Spray regularly with soft water in a shady, not too warm location
  • Do not fertilize moss in the room

If the pot does not have a water drain in the bottom, do not pour the moss with a gush of water, as this can lead to waterlogging. Please make sure that the moss-covered decoration does not get exposed to direct sunlight. Small stones or pieces of wood loosen up the visual appearance.

tips

A fresh moss carpet conjures up a natural, revitalizing ambience in the bathroom. All you need is a shallow, rot-resistant container (e.g. made of Plastazote), lean substrate and fresh moss from the forest. Arrange the pieces of moss close together on a thin layer of soil. The rootless land plant is very comfortable in the humid climate in the bath. Spraying the living moss carpet with water from time to time is already the whole care program.
