Ivy is a hardy climber that requires little light. You can even grow the plant in shady locations under trees and shrubs. She likes it a little lighter in the room. Direct sunlight, on the other hand, only tolerates ivy to a limited extent.

North windows are suitable as a location for ivy

Ivy also grows in the garden in the shade

Ivy is the ideal plant for all locations in the garden where it is too shady for other plants. That is why ivy is often planted in otherwise rather unfavorable places:

  • ground cover
  • Greening of shaded areas
  • privacy hedge
  • grave planting

A location in the garden that is shady to semi-shady is ideal. Ivy does not tolerate more than a few hours of direct sunlight. It is then necessary to water the plant more frequently. Direct sun during midday should be avoided altogether.

How much light does ivy need as a houseplant?

In the room you can easily place ivy in the middle of the room. But the climbing plant also grows well in the flower window. However, ivy as a houseplant should not get more than three to four hours of direct sun. If direct midday sun falls through the window, ensure that the plant is shaded.

If indoor ivy gets too much direct sun, unsightly brown or yellow spots will develop on the upper side of the leaf.

The lighter the plant is, the more often you have to water the ivy. But make sure that there is no waterlogging.

Variegated varieties like it lighter

While primarily dark green ivy varieties are grown in the garden, variegated varieties are mainly cultivated in the room, on the balcony or terrace.

Species with multicolored leaves need more light than common ivy. The colors will only develop if the plants are sufficiently bright or even slightly sunny for several hours a day. However, a location in direct midday sun is not recommended here either.

tips

Since ivy only needs little light in the room, the climbing plant is ideal for growing in the bedroom. Ivy is a real pollutant killer that absorbs 80 percent of mold spores from the air within twelve hours. The plant thus ensures a healthy indoor climate.
