Ivy is one of the most versatile plants in the garden. The climbing plant can be used in the garden for a wide variety of purposes, as it is undemanding in terms of location and does not require much care.

Garden design with ivy

There are many options for ivy in the garden. The climbing plant can be planted as

  • ground cover
  • Greening of shaded areas
  • privacy wall
  • facade greening

However, care should be taken when choosing the location. After a few years, ivy grows at breakneck speed and can only be kept in check by constant pruning.

When greening walls and facades, it should be noted that the adhesive roots nest in joints and the climbing plant cannot always be removed without damaging it.

Planting ivy in the garden

A good location in the garden is a shady to semi-shady spot. The soil should be good at storing water, but must be loose so that moisture does not accumulate.

When planting an ivy hedge, you need a trellis on which the climbing plant can climb. Good frameworks are wooden walls. If chicken wire (14.99€) is used as a framework, you have to wrap the tendrils around the wires by hand, as the adhesive roots cannot find a hold here.

How to care for ivy in open ground

Once ivy has grown well, hardly any care is required. Only regular pruning is urgently required, otherwise ivy will spread throughout the garden. It tolerates pruning so well that you can cut it down to the old wood.

You will need to water ivy more frequently in the beginning. The soil should never dry out completely. Watering may also be necessary in winter when little rain or snow falls. In later years, ivy has developed deep roots and then does not need to be watered as often.

Ivy is hardy and does not need winter protection. So that the soil does not dry out too much, it can make sense to protect it with a mulch cover in the first few years.

tips

Ivy is also suitable for keeping as a houseplant. Here, however, the plant needs a little more attention, since pests are more common in the room.
