Acacias are magnificent deciduous trees that will look great in your garden. Unfortunately, they are correspondingly demanding and require species-appropriate care. But if you know what is important when keeping an acacia, the tree will thank you for your effort with healthy growth and lush flowering.

Adapt the location to the seasons
A sunny location is recommended so that the acacia can develop its full bloom in summer. Extreme heat does not cause any problems for the deciduous tree. The acacia, on the other hand, does not tolerate cold. That's why it's important to relocate your acacia as soon as temperatures approach freezing. Either is recommended for overwintering
- a cool, dark location with temperatures of 0-5°C
- or a bright, sunny spot with temperatures of 10-15°C
In both cases it is possible that your acacia will lose its foliage. In the spring, however, it forms new leaves. When hibernating, avoid close proximity to a heat source.
What should be considered when keeping buckets?
In order to make the change of location as easy as possible in winter and summer, we recommend keeping them in buckets. This should allow enough space for the deciduous tree to develop roots and therefore have twice the volume of the root ball. Place the tub on feet to ensure root aeration from below. The acacia in bonsai form is particularly recommended for the bucket attitude.
pour
When watering the acacia, it is important to find the right balance. Waterlogging should not form, nor should the root ball dry out. Here are some tips for watering the acacia properly:
- by finger testing the substrate you will recognize the need for watering
- spray the acacia leaves with soft water every two to three days
- even in winter you have to water the acacia
- use water that is as low in lime as possible, such as rainwater or stagnant tap water
Fertilize
- A low-lime liquid fertilizer is recommended for fertilizing
- mix the fertilizer into the irrigation water
- in February or May you can use a slow-release fertilizer
- during the winter from October to January, stop fertilizing
To cut
Regular pruning of the acacia promotes branching. The time immediately after flowering is recommended. Due to the sharp thorns, you should wear protective gloves when cutting.
