In the first few years, ivy grows rather slowly. After two to three years, however, the growth accelerates rapidly. You should therefore cut ivy regularly if you do not want to overgrow the entire garden. When cutting, quite large amounts of cutting waste can accumulate. How to dispose of ivy from the garden.

It is better not to throw ivy in the compost

Dispose of ivy in the garden

If you only need to discard a few tendrils, that's usually not a problem. You can throw smaller shoots on top of the compost as long as they don't have clinging roots.

It becomes difficult if you have had to prune ivy in large quantities. It is better not to dispose of large quantities in the garden.

It is often recommended to simply chop or shred the plant residue and then throw it in the compost. That's not the best solution. On the one hand, shoots also sprout again. On the other hand, the smallest particles that can irritate the respiratory tract are released when cutting or chopping.

How to get rid of large amounts of ivy

You should therefore either dispose of larger quantities of ivy in organic bags via the garbage disposal or take them to the green waste collection point in your community.

This applies above all to mature shoots that have already flowered and formed berries.

Compost only conditionally suitable for disposal

It is better not to dispose of ivy tendrils with clinging roots in the compost. The plant finds ideal conditions there to spread further. In no case should you store ivy with fruit here. New plants develop from the fruits, which later spread throughout the garden.

Allow tendrils with adhesive roots to dry well for several days, for example on stone slabs. Then ivy dies and does not sprout again.

To be on the safe side, place the dried ivy branches on the compost so that they are covered by thick layers of other green material, such as grass clippings.

tips

You can easily grow new plants from ivy tendrils with adhesive roots if you want to create an ivy hedge or grow ground cover from ivy. You just need to lay out these shoots on the loosened garden soil. Cover them with a thin layer of soil and keep the soil well moist.
