Low-maintenance holly is fairly hardy and rarely suffers from pests or disease. If your leaves are turning yellow or brown, then you should also look for other causes. A lack of water could be behind it, for example.

Brown leaves are usually an indication of a lack of water

The hardy holly prefers a sunny location or light shade with a lime-poor and slightly moist soil. She likes neither waterlogging nor prolonged drought. Even in winter, your Ilex needs water because it evaporates a lot of moisture through its evergreen leaves. Water it on frost-free days, especially when the sun is shining. Otherwise your holly may die of thirst.

Preventive measures against brown leaves:

  • sunny to slightly shady location
  • moist lime-poor soil
  • water sufficiently even in winter
