In its Mediterranean homeland, the oleander prefers to thrive in sunny locations near river banks. We cannot conjure up the typical Mediterranean climate in Germany, but with the right choice of location we can make the shrub very comfortable here.

Oleander likes to be in the sun

Oleander needs a sunny and warm spot

As in its homeland, the oleander also needs a location in the blazing sun. The more light the plant gets, the more beautiful it blooms - and the sunnier the summer, the longer it shows its flowers. However, the sun is not enough for the sensitive plant to feel comfortable: it should also be warm, because the oleander also does not tolerate drafts well. Furthermore, you should make sure, especially with varieties with double flowers, that they do not get any rain. A torrential downpour can spoil the whole flower and also lead to a fungal infection. For this reason, it is best to place your oleander under an eaves or similar to protect it from downpours. Of course, the plant must not be in the shade there.

Flowering often fails in rainy summers

If the oleander does not really want to bloom, it is usually due to the weather. If the summer is rather cold and rainy, the shrub lacks the warming sun and refuses to flower. In such a case, you don't have a lot of options, unless you place the tub in the conservatory and provide more light with additional plant lights. Unless you have a conservatory, your only option is to protect the oleander from the rain.

Do not place in the sun immediately after the winter

Even if oleander is a real sun worshiper: After the winter you should not put it in the blazing sun. The plant is no longer used to this after being in relative darkness for a long time and could suffer from sunburn, in which case the leaves will quickly turn brown and dry out. Such damage does not regenerate in the evergreen plant (unless the leaf is dropped and a new one grows) and should therefore be avoided for optical reasons alone. So put the oleander in the shade first and then slowly increase the hours of sunshine from day to day.

tips

When clearing out the winter quarters, we recommend waiting for a day with mild temperatures but cloudy or overcast skies.
