White cabbage can be stored in the refrigerator, in the freezer or in the cellar for several weeks to several months. Find out below how to prepare your white cabbage for storage and how it stays fresh for the longest time.

Harvest white cabbage properly
Already during the harvest it is decided how long your white cabbage will keep. In most cases, the earlier you harvest your white cabbage, the less storable it is. Late varieties, which are only harvested in late autumn, have the longest shelf life.
It is also important that the leaves are not damaged during harvesting, because cuts are the first to spoil. To keep your white cabbage fresh for a long time, you should proceed as follows when harvesting:
- Pull your white cabbage out of the ground with its roots or cut it off just above the ground with a sharp, clean knife. Then remove the roots from the soil.
- Remove the roots (but not the stalk!) and particularly dirty, damaged or pitted outer leaves.
- Pat off loose dirt and rub sand and other dry with a hand or a cloth.
- Don't wash your cabbage if you plan to store it outside or in the fridge.
Store white cabbage in the refrigerator
Whole cabbage will keep in the fridge for up to two weeks. Keep in mind that the maximum storage time for white cabbage from the supermarket can be reduced because the cabbage is often not fresh. Cut cabbage should be covered with foil and will keep for about a week.
Hang white cabbage in the cellar
If you have enough space in the basement, you can keep your cabbage here for several months as follows: Tie a string to the cabbage stem and then hang it upside down from the ceiling.
Alternatively, you can also place your cabbage loosely in boxes. In this case, however, you should check it regularly for rotten spots.
Freeze cabbage
White cabbage can be frozen both raw and blanched. Cabbage can easily stay in the freezer for several months.
Store white cabbage on the balcony or terrace
If it's cool outside, an outdoor spot is also a good place for temporary storage. To do this, place your white cabbage in a tightly sealed container so that it does not fall victim to animals. However, make sure it doesn't freeze. If your white cabbage does get frost, you can still eat it, but it shouldn't go through severe temperature changes several times.
