The oleander (Nerium oleander), also known as 'rose laurel' in this country, is widespread around the Mediterranean. The wild form, with its pink flowers, overgrows the wet and fertile river meadows in particular, while the flowers of the cultivated varieties delight with a multitude of different shades of pink, red and violet. There are also some yellow oleanders.

Oleanders usually bloom in shades of pink

Do not cut off faded inflorescences

The fivefold flowers of the oleander are always in so-called cymes and are hermaphrodite - this means that the oleander does not need a second bush for successful pollination. The popularity of the oleander can not only be explained by the wonderful delicacy and colorfulness of its flowers, but also by its tireless blooming - the shrub, which can be up to five meters high, blooms continuously between June and September. However, you should not cut off faded inflorescences, just pluck them off - the following flowers are already at the top of the umbel and would also fall victim to the scissors.

tips

Not only the real oleander is known under the name 'Yellow Oleander', but also the highly poisonous Pasqueflower (Thevetia peruviana) from the tropics.
