The right seed

Kale is not just kale. You will find about 10 different types of kale on the market, which differ not only in their appearance but also in their requirements and when they are harvested. Where is kale sown?

Site requirements also vary slightly by variety, but in general kale prefers sunny sites with humus-rich, nutrient-rich soil. Kale does not like acidic soil, so if the soil is acidic, you should put some lime under the soil before sowing. Furthermore, a portion of compost gives the kale enough nutrients to thrive.

When is kale sown?

Kale can be sown directly outdoors from the end of May, when no more frost is to be expected. Alternatively, you can also prefer the seeds from the beginning of May, but this is not really necessary.

Sowing kale outdoors step by step

  • Dig up the soil well and fold in a few liters of compost
  • Make holes about 2cm deep in the soil
  • Keep a distance of 40 to 50 cm from one hole to the next or sow more densely if you want to prick out
  • Put the kale seeds in the holes and cover them with soil
  • Thoroughly water the area

Prefer kale on the windowsill

As an alternative to direct sowing, you can grow kale in warm weather from the beginning of May. To do this, proceed as follows:

  • Fill seed trays or egg cartons with potting soil
  • Sow the kale seeds about 2cm deep in the soil
  • Thoroughly water the shells
  • Put them in a bright, warm spot
  • When the plants are about 5 to 10 cm tall, they can be planted in the bed together with the bowl
