- Get cypress from winter quarters
Cypresses can easily be grown in pots on the balcony or terrace. But even outdoors, the conifers tolerate sub-zero temperatures only for a short time - in the pot, on the other hand, the cypress is not hardy at all. It must be protected from frost.

Cypresses in buckets do not tolerate frost
Cypresses in buckets are not hardy. The soil in the pot freezes through very quickly, so the tree suffers severe frostbite when temperatures drop very sharply.
In a pot, a cypress must therefore be overwintered frost-free.
Overwintering cypresses in pots properly
- Overwinter tubs indoors
- Place the pot on an insulating surface
- Wrap the tree in burlap or bubble wrap
- place in a protected corner on the balcony
- alternatively overwinter in a cool greenhouse
- water regularly
In order to get a cypress tree in a bucket well over the winter, you have to set it up so that it doesn't get frost. Temperatures between five and ten degrees are ideal for wintering.
In the house, cool hallway windows or unheated entrance areas are good parking spaces in winter. A cool greenhouse or unheated conservatory is even better.
If you don't have space in the house, place the cypress in a sheltered corner on the balcony or terrace.
Don't forget to water!
Even more than frost, the non-hardy cypress trees suffer from drought in winter. The root ball should never dry out completely. That's why you have to water the cypress regularly, even in winter. However, you must not fertilize them.
Water whenever the surface has dried about two centimeters deep. Make sure that the water can run off so that there is no waterlogging.
Get cypress from winter quarters
When the days are getting longer and it's not that cold anymore, slowly get the cypress used to the fresh air again. Set them out in the sun for hours.
Spring is also the best time to repot the cypress.
tips
Cypresses in the garden tolerate minus temperatures up to a maximum of 15 degrees for a short time. If the frost period lasts longer, there is a risk that the tree will die. In unfavorable locations you should therefore rather plant false cypresses or thuja.
