They find space in a 5 cm pot and delight us with dainty flowers with a diameter of 2-3 cm. Mini orchids are the striking result of successful crossings of small Phalaenopsis hybrids and small wild species. Read here how to skilfully care for the floral gnomes.

Mini orchids inspire with their dreamy flowers in mini format

How do I water a mini orchid in an exemplary manner?

A mini orchid - like its big sisters - is placed in a bright location with warm temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. In view of the small volume, the orchid soil dries out more quickly. To prevent the risk of waterlogging, we recommend submerging the plant instead of watering it. That is how it goes:

  • When the coarse substrate feels dry, remove the clear pot from the planter
  • Immerse the root ball in soft, room-warm water until no more air bubbles rise
  • Do not allow water to enter the heart of the plant or the axils of the leaves

If the transparent culture pot is steamed up from the inside, there is no need for water, even if individual parts of the substrate feel dry.

Does a miniature orchid need fertilizer?

The orchid gnomes grow much more slowly than their majestic counterparts. The nutrient requirement is correspondingly lower. Therefore, only fertilize every 4 weeks during the growth and flowering period of a mini Phalaenopsis. To do this, add a half-strength liquid orchid fertilizer to the immersion water. If the tropical plant takes a break in winter, do not administer any fertilizer until the next sprouting.

Can I prune a short orchid?

The rule of thumb for mini orchids is: Never cut green plant parts. You can pluck faded flowers if you feel disturbed by their appearance. Only cut off leaves and shoots when they are completely dead. To do this, use a very sharp knife or scalpel that you have previously disinfected with alcohol or spirit.

tips

Mini orchids are often planted in moist moss and in a pot without an opening in the bottom so that they look attractive in the shop. It is best to free the little flower beauties at home from this completely unsuitable environment immediately. Repotted in a transparent culture pot with permeable, special orchid soil, the tropical plants feel very welcome in their new home.
