In contrast to many other ground covers, the cushion phlox forms an almost unbelievable number of individual flowers on the surface of its low plant cushions. So that the most lush flowers can form, a sunny and rather dry location should be selected for the cushion phlox.

With a little skill, the flowering period of the cushion phlox can be extended

A colorful herald of spring

The cushion phlox flowers relatively persistently in most locations between May and June. However, spring is also the best time to plant new specimens of this plant in the garden. Due to the irritation caused by transplanting these young plants, it can naturally happen that the flowers do not appear in the usual abundance of flowers until the second year. With the cushion phlox, a combination of differently colored flowering cultivars is also attractive, after all there are numerous varieties with the following flower colors:

  • White
  • Red
  • white and pink striped
  • pink
  • scarlet
  • white with a blue eye

Even more flowers through a targeted cut

Under certain circumstances, the cushion phlox can also flower again after the actual flowering period. For this purpose, a pruning of about a third of the plant height should take place immediately after the flowering period in spring.

tips

If you don't want to do without the dainty phlox flowers later in the year, then you can also cultivate taller-growing phlox varieties such as the meadow phlox or the tall summer phlox in addition to the cushion phlox.
