If a lady's slipper orchid sets the scene in the garden, its floral spectacle raises the reputation of the gardener immensely. In order for the lavish blossom to unfold in all its glory, it depends on the ideal location. Read here under which general conditions a Cypripedium in the field fulfills all expectations.

The lady's slipper orchid came to us from shady forests

The best light and temperature conditions

Most of the wild species and natural hybrids thrive in the shelter of the forests in the rather cool regions of the northern hemisphere. Assign a hardy lady's slipper orchid to a location with these light and temperature conditions:

  • Half-shady location, without blazing sun at noon
  • Temperatures do not exceed 30 degrees Celsius in summer
  • Temperatures around freezing point for at least 2 months in winter

Please avoid a place in the immediate vicinity of trees and bushes. The terrestrial orchid is no match for this root competition. However, the beauty of the flowers has nothing to object to being associated with ferns.

The optimal floor

Combine a humus-rich, well-drained soil condition with the ideal light and temperature conditions. The lady's slipper orchid prefers to stretch out its roots in loose, fresh soil with a pH value of no more than 6.5.
