The winter or snow heather (Erica carnea) is sometimes confused with the common heather, also known as heather, which blooms much later in the year. With the Winterheide, on the other hand, the name says it all.

A first tender herald of spring in the midst of snow and ice
There aren't many plants that can withstand the winter cold and, right from the start of the year, add splashes of color to a garden that often seems a bit morbid at this time of year. With its subtle blossoms between February and April, the winter heather not only provides a first indication of the approaching spring, but is also an important bee pasture.
The advantages of the winter heath
The winter heather is particularly popular at the following locations:
- in the balcony box
- as grave planting
- as a ground cover
- in the heather garden
Since the snow heather is much more winter-hardy than the summer-flowering heather, with good care it is a grateful, perennial ornamental plant in the garden. In contrast to the common heather, the snow heather does not need a boggy subsoil.
tips
With an annual pruning of the winter heather, you can ensure more lush flowering in the following year.
