There are more than 100 varieties of Dipladenia, also known as Mandevilla. It was already well known in the 19th century, but has since been forgotten. Many breeds have been more or less adapted to the European climate.

The flower shape varies a little depending on the variety

For example, the different Dipladenia Sundaville species that a Japanese breeder developed from the Mandevilla are very interesting. The Dipladenia "Sundaville Red" (R) impresses with beautiful velvety red flowers and a particularly lush growth.

Which Dipladenia is suitable for which location?

Basically, all dipladenia should get a warm and bright place. Depending on their size and growth habit, some varieties are more or less suitable for planting in balcony boxes or hanging baskets.

In window boxes (€109.00), it is best to plant short and rather bushy varieties, optionally also hanging or semi-hanging, such as plants from the Sundaville Classic series or "Diamantina Jade White". Since the Dipladenia do not tolerate waterlogging, create a drainage layer in the planters before planting.

You can also plant tall and/or climbing Dipladenia in boxes that you put on the terrace or in the garden. Give the plant a climbing aid, for example a trellis or a special trellis. However, keep in mind that the Dipladenia are not hardy and should be brought to a suitable bright winter quarters quite early.

The essentials in brief:

  • over 100 varieties
  • Mandevilla laxa: Chilean jasmine, white flowers
  • Dipladenia "Sundaville Red" (R): hybrid breed, luxuriant growth, bright red flowers
  • Mandevilla 'Diamantina Opale Yellow Citrine': lemon-yellow flowers with an orange center
  • Mandevilla sanderi: flowers early and particularly abundantly, well branched, velvety flower colours
  • Mandevilla "Tropidenia": bushy growth, particularly long flowering period
