Roses are quite susceptible flowers, which often react to disturbances with reduced or even stopped growth. In this article we have compiled the possible causes for this and what you can do about them.

When roses grow slowly, there can be various reasons

Soil fatigue is a common cause

If the freshly planted roses really want to grow, then so-called soil fatigue can be the reason. The causes of this phenomenon have not yet been fully clarified, but it is suspected that the roses react to a specific bacterial cocktail in the soil. This develops when roses have previously stood at the selected location. Incidentally, other species belonging to the rose family (e.g. stone and pome fruit varieties, raspberries, strawberries and also many ornamental plants) can also produce this effect. As a rule, only a change of location or a generous exchange of soil helps.

Inappropriate location and care

Other common causes of a lack of growth of the rose are an unsuitable location and / or improper care. If the location is right, roses forgive a lot, even small negligence in care. However, soil that is too dry or too wet makes roses much more susceptible to pests and diseases, and too little or the wrong nutrient content leads to growth problems. The problem is not just poor soil or insufficient fertilization, but often also over-fertilization - especially with nitrogen, phosphorus or lime.

Rose diseases and pest infestations

Fungal diseases and pest infestations are very common in roses, especially when they are already weakened due to improper care or an unsuitable location. This weakening very often also means that the roses can put less energy into growth - after all, they are completely occupied with fending off or compensating for the consequences of the infestation. If the rose is very prone to the like, try moving it. A strong pruning when transplanting and well-prepared soil in another place can already significantly reduce the susceptibility.

tips

If the location and care are not the cause of the undergrowth, errors in planting may be a possibility. Many rose lovers mulch the rose, possibly with bark mulch. Roses do not tolerate such treatment at all, because the mulch (€239.00) prevents the necessary exchange of air in the soil and also promotes the colonization of fungi.
