Beautiful roses are not a privilege for garden owners, because many varieties can be cultivated very well on the balcony with the right care and a suitable pot. To ensure that this project succeeds, we have put together some important tips for maximum success.
Not all rose varieties do well on the balcony
The right choice of variety
First of all, you should keep in mind that any container situation is stressful due to the limited space for plants. For this reason, not all rose varieties are suitable for a balcony culture.
Choose hardy varieties
So that you can enjoy your roses for a long time and you don't have to worry about ailing specimens, choose robust and disease-resistant varieties. The rose varieties with the so-called ADR seal are highly recommended, because they have had to undergo years of strict testing and prove their resistance.
Note the space conditions
Since the space in pots is naturally limited, not all roses are suitable for this type of attitude. Rose varieties that grow very large, such as Rambler, are unsuitable; it is better to use compact shrub or bed roses. High stems are ideal for a tub culture and some dwarf roses even feel at home in the balcony box. With the exception of these, however, roses always need sufficiently high pots, with dimensions from 50 x 50 centimeters - depending on the growth strength of the respective rose variety - being optimal. Roses are very deep-rooting and need more space in depth than in width.
location and substrate
If the location is not right, even the most robust rose will not feel comfortable and will bring you little joy. Conversely, the plant forgives you for small care mistakes if it only feels comfortable in its place.
The right rose for every location
Although roses generally prefer a sunny location, they do not tolerate heat or heat build-up. So it should be bright on your balcony - about four to five hours of sun per day is ideal - and quite airy, but direct sunlight all day long will not necessarily appreciate the rose. South-west or south-east facing balconies are very suitable, while south-facing balconies should be shaded at least at midday. But there are also suitable rose varieties for shady west, east and even north locations.

Also, be sure to buy frost hardy varieties of roses. It is best to plant these in a pot made of clay, as they are the best at keeping out cold temperatures in winter. Nevertheless, good winter protection is essential.
