A Venus flytrap does not form a very strong root system. Nevertheless, the pot should be big enough to avoid waterlogging and to give the plant space to spread out. The right planter for Venus fly traps.

The Venus Flytrap is a demanding pot plant

This is how big the pot should be for a Venus flytrap

The ideal pot for a Venus Flytrap has a diameter that matches the height of the plant. He can also be a little bigger.

The depth should be such that you can insert drainage below. In addition, the pot needs at least one large or several small drainage holes to ensure the water supply.

Pots made of water-absorbent materials such as clay must be watered well before planting so that they do not deprive the substrate of moisture.

Which substrate is suitable?

You should never use plain garden soil to fill the pot, as it contains too many nutrients and is also not airy enough.

In specialist shops you can get special plant substrates for carnivores, including the Venus flytrap. You can also use orchid soil, but only slightly fertilized.

Experts put together their plant substrate themselves. Main components are:

  • peat (white peat)
  • peat moss
  • curd sand
  • expanded clay
  • styrofoam balls

Create drainage!

Venus fly plants like it moist, but they don't like having their roots directly in the water. Therefore, create a drainage of pebbles or coarse-grained sand in the lower part of the pot.

Place pot in saucer

Place the pot in a saucer. In here you pour rainwater until the water level is an inch or two high. Once the water has been absorbed, wait two days and then water again.

Make sure the humidity is sufficiently high. It should be constant between 40 and 60 degrees.

Avoid strong temperature fluctuations. A drafty place is unfavorable, as it quickly gets too cool here. In summer you can also bring the Venus flytrap outside if you slowly get the plant used to it.

tips

Care should be taken when breeding a Venus Flytrap in the terrarium. Direct sunlight causes very high temperatures, which drop sharply during the night. However, a Venus flytrap does not like fluctuating temperatures at all.
