In order for autumn crocuses to spread the hoped-for abundance of flowers in the autumn garden, the right planting time is important. Read here when to plant the Colchicum autumnale in the ground. Practical tips on planting techniques ensure that the flowering period starts on time.

Autumn crocus bulbs are planted in summer

Autumn bloomers want to go into the ground in summer

The bulb of an autumn crocus already has the finished buds in its luggage. One of the special characteristics of the autumn bloomer is that the flowers rise from the tuber without having to form roots beforehand. The autumn crocus is in full bloom within 6 weeks of planting. This makes midsummer, during the months of August and September, the ideal planting time.

How to properly plant the bulbs in the ground

Autumn crocuses feel at home in a sunny to partially shaded, warm and sheltered location. How to plant the bulbs properly:

  • Dig small planting holes 30 cm apart in fresh, moist, nutrient-rich soil
  • Plant the onions, point up, 15 cm deep
  • Fill in the soil enriched with compost, press down and water

A single autumn crocus looks very lost in the bed and lawn. Therefore, arrange the flower bulbs in tuffs with 5 to 10 or more specimens. The relatively large planting distance takes into account the expansive leaves that only sprout in spring. Please consider the high poison content in all planting and care work. Any contact with autumn crocuses should only be done with gloves.

tips

With innovative breeding, you avoid the risk of confusion between autumn crocuses and crocuses, at least during the flowering period. The Colchicum speciosum 'Waterlily' inspires with lavishly filled, purple-pink flowers - extravagant and unmistakable.
