Depending on how you grow your lucky bamboo, in water, hydroponics or soil, it will require more or less fertilizer. In general, however, it is true that too little fertilizer is better tolerated than too much at once.

Fresh, clean water is more important than fertilizer

Even more important than the fertilizer is clean and low-lime or lime-free water for the health and long life of your lucky bamboo. Top up regularly to keep the water level roughly the same. Replace unclean or foul-smelling water immediately, otherwise your Lucky Bamboo could rot or become moldy.

Lucky bamboo in the vase

In the vase, the lucky bamboo does not get any nutrients without fertilizer, so it must be fertilized regularly. About every seven to 14 days is sufficient. You can use commercial hydroponic fertilizer. Always give only a small dose, so that no algae can form in the water.

Lucky bamboo in hydroponics

Similar to the vase, easy-care lucky bamboo in hydroponics does not get any nutrients from the substrate. It is therefore dependent on an external supply in the form of fertilizer. Again, you should fertilize every week or every 14 days. You can get special fertilizer for plants in hydroponics in the garden center or in the hardware store.

lucky bamboo in soil

If you have planted your lucky bamboo in soil, then fertilize a little less frequently, since the soil also contains nutrients. In fresh soil, the bamboo can do without fertilizer for a few months. If you want to transplant your lucky bamboo from the vase or hydroponics into soil, then wait until it is sufficiently rooted.

The essentials in brief:

  • in a vase or in hydroponics, fertilize regularly every one to two weeks
  • in fresh potting soil do without fertilizer for the time being
  • Fertilize rarely in older soil, maximum once a month
  • Better to fertilize too little than too much
  • When keeping without soil, make sure the water level is even
  • replace dirty or foul-smelling water

tips

Planted in soil, the lucky bamboo only needs a little fertilizer, since soil already contains nutrients. Without soil, however, it is dependent on regular fertilization.
