Since the periwinkle is usually only planted in rather shady locations due to its care needs, the water requirement is usually limited. Nevertheless, the periwinkle can dry up in certain situations.

The periwinkle rarely needs to be watered

Water the periwinkle properly in summer

Since the periwinkle protects its own root area from evaporation, it normally does not have to be watered in addition to the natural rainfall. However, additional watering should be carried out if:

  • the weather is extremely dry for long periods of time
  • the periwinkle is cultivated in a planter on the balcony
  • it is a relatively sunny location
  • the soil does not retain moisture well
  • These are freshly planted young plants

Be careful in winter

Occasionally (especially with evergreen plants) watering may also be necessary in winter. This is the case if the soil was not supplied with enough moisture in autumn and there are winter frosts. Then, at the beginning of a frost-free period lasting several days, it should be watered well dosed.

tips

The ground cover Vinca minor is often planted as a green carpet on steep slopes. This is not a problem in itself, but slopes are often very dry for physical reasons. That is why you should ensure that the evergreens are adequately watered to ensure healthy plant growth, even on slopes.
