The South African hook lily adorns the summer garden with exotic flowers. The bulbous plant clearly trumps other genera within the Amaryllis family in terms of cold tolerance. However, a Crinum cannot be treated as really hardy. Read here how to overwinter the garden amaryllis properly.

The hook lily is not hardy and must be dug up before the cold snap

This is how the hook lily gets through the winter unscathed

If the thermometer falls below freezing in autumn, it is high time to bring the hook lily to safety. The onion cannot withstand temperatures below -1 degree Celsius for a long time. How to hibernate the garden amaryllis safe and sound:

  • Dig up the onion before the first frost
  • Completely remove the fallen foliage
  • Keep the tubers dry and airy in the dark cellar

The garden amaryllis is sufficiently hardy for cultivation in mild wine-growing regions. Under a thick mulch, fixed with a few fir fronds, there are good prospects for renewed budding next year.
